On Thursday, November 12, 2020, the San Ignacio Society held their first program in their Speaker Series. The topic was “Current Themes in the National Discussion on Immigration Policy and Politics.” Our panel of experts were Ruth Lopez-McCarthy ’99, an Immigration Attorney, Juan Manuel Pedroza ’99, Associate Professor of Political Science at University of California, Santa Cruz , Ricardo Ramirez, Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame, Rebecca Shi, Executive Director at American Business Immigration Coalition, co-hosted by San Ignacio Programming Chair, Patricia Avila Rodriguez ’98 and moderated by San Ignacio Membership Co-Chair Simón Weffer ’91, Associate Professor of Sociology and Latino and Latin American Studies at Northern Illinois University. There were over 50 attendees, including members of club ALAS. They talked about what changes may come from a new administration and how this recent campaign brought a new focus on immigration and created a strong coming together of the Latinx Community.
They explained why reframing immigration offenses and investing in Community Organizations were critical and that everyone should get involved. Other essential information was about the Legal Protection Agencies and how being educated about Immigration policies is very useful. A final message to tie everything together: Please always remember to Vote.
